| The Dance • | Biography Born in Bradford (West Yorkshire) of Jamaican and Irish parentage, Gerard studied at Central St. Martins and Wimbledon School of Art gaining a Masters in Fine Art & Printmaking. Current project 'The Meaning of Style' “Young men and the fashion code of the current Jamaican sound system dance provide a rich source for this project. The backdrop of Kingston, alongside the pose and body language of these young men, brings out the serious challenges that Jamaican culture faces today, which is echoed in cities around the world. This culturally dominant movement, which is exported to all corners of the world, brings with it issues found within Hip-Hop and Grime culture in the UK. These issues are continuously under scrutiny, both in the mass media and the academic arena alike. The many mixed influences and resulting otherness which are derived from the movement of people from one continent to another is a true reflection of the horrors of its origin; the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The power of US Hip-Hop culture is very evident. Yet within this the influence of the United Kingdom’s demotic vernacular style, combined with the flair and creativity in Jamaica, bends and creates something different. Still there is an ever-increasing fear that homogeneity is unstoppable in this world of accessible travel and communication channels." New Art Exchange Tel: 0115 924 8630 |
